Small Area Games (SAG)

Small-area games
are competitive hockey drills conducted in a smaller-than-normal playing area. Coaches can use various configurations, such as cross-ice, neutral zone, or corners, depending on the specific skills they want to teach. The key idea is to decrease the space and increase the pace to enhance player development and force game-like situation. Here are some details about small-area games:

1.  Cross-Ice Games: These games are played across the width of the rink, dividing it into smaller sections. They allow more players to participate simultaneously, leading to increased touches, shots and overall engagement.

2.  Neutral Zone Games: These focus on transition situations, emphasizing quick decision-making and puck movement between offense and defense.

3.  Corner Games: Played in one corner of the rink, these games help players develop skills related to tight spaces, battling for the puck, puck protection and making quick plays.

4.  Breakouts, Defensive Zone Coverage, and Power Plays: Coaches can design small-area games specifically to work on these aspects of play.

5.  Skills Around the Net: These games simulate scoring opportunities near the goal, helping players improve their shooting, deflections, and net-front presence.

Small-area games provide an excellent opportunity for players to learn through game-like situations, and they’re especially effective for younger players. By scaling down the playing surface, coaches can increase skill development and player enjoyment while maintaining a high level if intensity and engagement.
