GAP CONTROL

Gap control is a fundamental skill that every hockey player should master. It involves maintaining the right amount of distance between you and an attacking player while keeping the puck in sight. To effectively “control the gap”, players must learn to read the game and adjust their position accordingly.

Let’s dive deeper into this critical aspect of hockey defense:

  1. Understanding Gap Control:
    • Gap control refers to maintaining a proper distance between the offensive player and the defender. This distance allows the defender to maintain control of the situation and prevent the offensive player from scoring. Traditionally a proper gap is set at one stick length from the attacking player, although this can change based on game situation.
    • Effective gap control requires good skating technique, agility, and the ability to read the game to anticipate the movements of opposing players. Proper gap control is an effective first step in “angling” opposing players towards the boards and/or wide depending on the zone of play.
  2. Positioning on the Ice:
    • One of the most crucial aspects of gap control is positioning yourself correctly on the ice. As a defender, you need to be aware of where you are in relation to the attacker and adjust your position accordingly.
  3. Skating Technique:
    • Good skating technique is essential for effective gap control. You need to:
      • Move quickly and smoothly on the ice.
      • Change direction at a moment’s notice.
      • Maintain balance and speed in relation to the attacking player.
  4. Communication and Anticipation:
    • Communicate with your teammates to coordinate defensive efforts.
    • Anticipate the offensive player’s next move by reading their body language and positioning to adjust your gap accordingly.

Many players often maintain too large a gap because they’re afraid of getting beaten. A large gap allows the puck-carrier more control because it gives them more time, space, and options. As a defender, you want to dictate the action, forcing the offensive player to “make a decision” - especially as you get closer to the defensive zone. This is done by maintaining a “tight” gap with the attacking player.

While maintaining the gap, ensure the defender keeps their eyes on the player and not the puck. It is suggested that the defender focuses on the opponent’s chest to limit the possibility of falling for a fake or deke. While maintaining the gap, it is also important for the defender to keep their stick in front of you so you can poke-check and block passing lanes.

Remember, mastering gap control is crucial for limiting scoring opportunities and becoming a strong defensive player.
